Curtain hoods: what is it and what are it for?

For a long time, our room gaped in a huge empty window with a balcony door. I still could not get together to buy a curtain rod and curtains, I didn’t like it, then I didn’t have time.
Finally, we bought a round curtain rod for spare parts at Leroy Merlin, or rather two, they had to be fastened together. The distance from corner to wall corner is more than 3 meters.

When I found the curtains I needed for sewing, the dressmaker dissuaded me from the round cornice, since he visually reduced the space of the room, and sculpting it in two parts was unreliable. We passed the round, took the ceiling, however, also from 2 components.

I did not like the ceiling cornice because of its simplicity. Then I learned from the Internet about such a decor tool as a hood, in fact it is a molding.
There, in Leroy, we looked at the samples, the choice was small, the required size was missing.
What came up in price and color was found on Ozone. After a couple of days, I got what I wanted.

I chose the Escar Antik blend of 350 cm long, 7 cm wide. There were many different options in both color and dimensional terms, I settled on this. It was presented in silver, gold and 2 brown colors. We ordered silver.

This is a fairly young company from Podolsk, which specializes in the production of cornices and tools for window decoration.

The packaging was a rather large roll; the hood itself was made of hard plastic (PVC). It bends well, can be used for a cornice with rounded edges, and at the same time quite fragile. Well, that is, it is not necessary to step on it and bend too much.
I had to delve into how to mount this thing on the ledge.

Initially, my husband and I did wrong. They hung a cornice, you know, had to drill holes with a puncher. After that, we began to unwind this thing and try to drive it into the rails.

Useless. She constantly popped up. And all this with outstretched arms under the ceiling more than 3 meters high.

After a series of futile attempts and almost breaking the hood, I had to remove the cornice to the floor. The ceiling cornice of Leroy is still not very high quality and strong, from repeated actions with a drill slightly crumbled.

And already having decomposed the whole thing on the floor, the two of us managed to get into the puzzle piece by piece and drive the bar into the rail! But it was not an easy matter, I tell you. Many succeed with several attempts and with a larger number of pulling workers.
We just cut off the extra piece.

Advantages:
1. Not good, simple and beautiful. The pattern is not striking.
2. Hooks, loops closed. The junction from the connection of the two cornices in the middle is closed.
3. Cheap. We took for 150 rubles per share (now more expensive).
Once tormented and forgotten. Now rejoice.

What are the blends

Eaves hoods have a simple design, but are presented in a variety of variations. As a rule, their inner side is white and smooth, while the outer side is richly decorated. Depending on the decor, planks are of the following types:

Classic whites.
Plain, made in different shades.
Imitation of natural materials: wood, marble, leather, metal.
Decorated with stucco, rhinestones, sparkles, painting.
With molding - a special narrow insert at the bottom or top of the hood, which simulates a strip of metal.

A large selection of decorative strips for the cornice allows you to easily choose the right option, regardless of what style you have made the room’s interior, what decor you like. In order not to be mistaken with the model, when buying, one should take into account not only the appearance of the hood and the style in which it is made, but also how it combines with the cornice, curtains and room design, what is the area of the room, what size of the window opening. For example, if the room is small with a small window, then it is better to give preference to a narrow decorative strip, but for large rooms with wide window openings, it is worth choosing a bar at least 5 cm wide.

Hood installation

Eaves hood is not only simple in design and low price, but also easy to install. You can fix it in the following ways:

Some slats are equipped with locks, which are designed to mount the product to the ledge. To install the decorated ribbon, just attach it to the suspension system and snap the locks in the side axils of the cornice. With this installation, the lens hood will be as even and tight as possible.

If the purchased product is not equipped with latches, then this is not a reason to be upset. You can fix it with double-sided tape. To do this, adhesive tape is glued along the entire length of the cornice, and then a decorative panel is glued to it. Such an installation is quite strong and reliable, but will require more time than if the decor was mounted on snap-locks.

The most common type of hood mount. With the help of superglue, Velcro is glued to the suspension system for curtains, after which a decorative strip is applied and also glued.

Installing the hood is easy enough and you can do it yourself without resorting to the help of a wizard. It takes a little time, effort too. But it is worth considering that if you decide to fasten the bar to double-sided tape or Velcro and glue, then in this case the product will become non-removable and cannot be replaced if you suddenly decide to update the cornice.

Features and purpose

The main purpose of the hood is to decorate the outside of the ceiling cornice. In addition, this element will help to hide from view the hooks on which the curtains hang. Such a tape looks like a thin strip of plastic, trimmed on the outside in different ways. There is a special fastener on this strip that will allow you to fix it on the ceiling curtain. The outer side of the part can be painted in different ways:

Design "wood", leather or other natural materials.

Just a white color.

The surface can be monochromatic in almost any color.

With a special insert - molding. It is a narrow strip at the top or bottom of the lens hood and simulates metal.

With voluminous decorations, like stucco patterns or decor for picture frames.

In general, there are a lot of design options for this part. There is no way to list all the options, as new ideas for finishing this element appear every day. The photo below shows several examples of the use of such products.

In addition to various external decorations, such stripes can have different widths. Depending on this, they will create the desired visual effect. The length of such parts is selected based on the size of the suspension to be decorated. Similar products are sold per meter and you can choose the right length for any curtain model. The maximum length of one strip can be 60 meters.

Purpose and features

Nowadays, you can easily create a harmonious interior in any way. To do this, you must correctly select all the components of the situation. It is possible to emphasize this or that style of the room with the help of beautiful cornices. You can add brighter colors to their design with a hood. The main purpose of these additions is to decorate the front of the ceiling cornice.

Moreover, such inserts can well hide ugly hooks to which curtains are attached. These decorative trims are present on many profile cornices made of plastic and aluminum. Typically, a hood is a thin plastic strip trimmed on the outside with various materials. Such elements are equipped with special fasteners, with the help of which they are attached directly to the cornice.

Varieties

Blends are divided into separate types in accordance with the external color:

Most often found in interiors classic white strips. Such products can be safely called universal, as they easily fit into almost any ensemble. They can be selected for cornices having different shapes and textures.
Truly chic and rich in appearance have options, the surface of which imitates genuine leather, reptile skin, wood different shades and other similar materials. Such a detail can play the role of a bright accent in the interior.
More simple and unobtrusive are plain blends. The most common instances of brown, gray, burgundy, green and black shades. As a rule, such models are selected in accordance with the color scheme of the curtains, but contrasting combinations look no less attractive.

You can emphasize the richness and aristocracy of the situation with the help of spectacular trims with extra decorations. This can be exquisite stucco, spangles, placers of rhinestones, artificial pebbles of different colors or glass inserts. Often, such instances can be found in artsy and non-trivial styles, such as baroque or avant-garde.
Look no less elegant trims equipped with moldings. The moldings in this case are a special insert imitating a precious metal.
Expensive appearance boasts carved hoods and patterned reliefs. Their surface can imitate natural wood, gold or silver.

Also, decorative strips for ceiling cornices vary in materials. Most often, inexpensive plastic products are found in stores. This material has flexibility, durability and unpretentiousness. He does not need to provide constant care. Modern manufacturers produce a lot of high-quality and wear-resistant metal-plastic strips. Such designs will last their owners for many years and are unlikely to lose their pristine appearance. Such products are recommended for the design of large and long cornices. Unfortunately, in our country metal-plastic strips are extremely rare.

We must not forget about the width of these details. There are narrow strips of no more than 2 cm, and there are wider specimens, the size of which reaches a mark of 5-6 cm.

How to choose?

If you want to transform the situation with such an interesting detail, then it is better to approach its selection as seriously as possible, otherwise the ledge will look inharmonious in the interior. At the initial stage, you should look at the hood, based on the width of the area provided for it on the curtain. If you skip this point, the composition will be strange and ridiculous.

Be sure to consider the footage of the room and the dimensions of the window opening. For example, in small spaces and on small cornices large and solid planks supplemented with artificial stones and rhinestones will look unsuccessful. That is why it is so important to choose blends based on the interior and floor space. In the case when you want to fill up a room with a beautiful plank with a pattern, you must make sure that its motive and color fit into the concept of the situation.

Decorative hoods are made exclusively for ceiling structures made of plastic or aluminum, so do not try to put them on other mounts. Today, many companies divide such products into subgroups, depending on what fixtures and from what materials they are made.

How to fix to the ceiling ledge?

Once you have acquired the option of a suitable style and performance, you can proceed to its immediate installation. But how to wear a decorative hood?

We will deal with this issue in stages:

If you bought a bar with special locks, you will only need to snap them into the prepared side sinuses located directly on the curtain. In this case, the hood will be installed along the entire length as smoothly and correctly as possible.
If such fasteners are not provided in the decorative strip, then double-sided wide adhesive tape must be glued to the area where this part will be located. After that, the decor can be firmly pressed to the adhesive surface. However, this method has a serious drawback: in the future it will be impossible to remove or replace the hood, because a high-quality and reliable double-sided tape will reliably connect both parts.
There is another way to install an additional bracket on the mount. To do this, stock up on glue and Velcro. But here it is worth making a digression and mentioning that after such work the lens hood will become fixed and will become a lifetime component of the cornice.

First you need to stick one side of the Velcro to the curtain using super glue. The second side must be glued to the bar itself. After that, both parts should be tightly interconnected. For added strength, a little more glue can be applied to the inside of the Velcro between the cornice and the plank.

Beautiful interiors

A properly selected lens hood can breathe life into the interior and make it more complete. For example, in a minimalist green bedroom with a white ceiling and beige flooring, you can hang cozy lime curtains on a ledge decorated with a strict white plank of large width. Beat the ensemble with a small green chair near the window, white pillows on the bed, a green plaid and caramel carpet on the floor.

In an elegant bedroom with snow-white walls and a ceiling, as well as a gray-brown floor, you can put a double white bed with chocolate linen, a beautiful white chest of drawers and complete the interior with warm creme brulee curtains on a ledge with a chocolate carved plank.

An interesting and cozy interior will turn out if in a room with a white ceiling and walls there is a wooden bed with a high headboard and footboard, as well as elegant armchairs with carved legs and upholstered with carnations. The windows in such a room should be decorated with beige curtains with dull floral prints and a beautiful bar made in a similar vein.

A golden blend will look beautiful in a bedroom with a white ceiling and walls with wallpaper and golden patterns. Put in this room a white leather bed with cream pillows and a dark chocolate bedspread. Near the windows, place a chocolate leather armchair. Hang translucent cream-colored curtains on the curtain rods.

If you want to use the original color combination in the room, decorate the walls with blue stucco, and the walls with white. Against such a background, peach curtains on the ledge with a white relief strip will be interesting to stand out.

Striped curtains combining brown, yellow and blue color, as well as dark chocolate blend with wood imitation and thin white lines will look no less original on a snow-white background.
