Primer Knauf: properties and application

The primer of the walls and floor is carried out during construction for reliable adhesion of finishing materials to the wall surface. When choosing a primer, you need to pay attention to its technical characteristics and composition. The type of surface, humidity in the room, a further method of decoration are taken into account.

Knauf offers a range of mixes for every need. The popular deep penetration primer Tiefengrund Knauf. It strengthens the surface of the base, reduces its ability to absorb, improves the adhesion of the finish. Due to its increased penetration ability, it is suitable for fine pore materials.

About Knauf

Tiefengrund Knauf is a universal primer suitable for both exterior and interior use. It dries quickly, has no color, no specific smell. Certificate of conformity

The manufacturing company Knauf has a certificate of product compliance with high standards of European quality. The document indicates that the soil was subjected to all the necessary research, control, which ultimately confirmed the conformity of products to GOST.

The certification of the composition was to:

  • selection of material for laboratory research,
  • analysis of production and manufacturing processes,
  • certification by indicators.

After all control studies, the composition is labeled and certified.

The spread in prices is large, the cost is formed depending on the region, the volume and quantity of units purchased at a time.

  1. On average, in the Moscow region a 5-liter can is bought for 400 r.
  2. A bucket of 10 liters will be more expensive, its price exceeds 845 p.
  3. For wholesale buyers in construction offline / online stores, they often organize promotions, under the terms of which when buying from 20-30 buckets the cost of 1 kg of the mixture will not exceed 40 p. Soil has a wide range of applications and is useful at all construction sites.

Application features

Regardless of the choice of primer mixture, it is important to properly prepare the surface. Before applying it, the treated surface must be cleaned and degreased. If there are any remains of old paint, varnish or any other finish on the wall or ceiling, they must be removed, washed and dried if necessary.

The can is carefully opened, its contents are diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 1. To check whether the degree of dilution of the soil is suitable for the base on which it will be applied, you need to make several test strokes. Testing will help evaluate how many layers the mixture needs to be applied.

The manufacturer does not recommend the use of soil on surfaces coated with a glue-oil composition.

Tiefengrund can be applied with a roller, brush, sprayed with a spray gun or spray gun. Immediately after the first layer, you need to apply the second, without waiting for drying.

It is necessary to ensure that the consumption rate of the mixture is not exceeded, this will lead to its runoff and the formation of sagging. If the drywall surface is primed, just apply 1 coat.

It is necessary to observe safety measures:

  • In no case should residues be drained into the sewers or water bodies,
  • if the composition gets into the eyes or on any other part of the mucous membrane, it must be thoroughly washed with a stream of clean water,

  • the solution cannot be disposed of as household waste,
  • it is advisable to use personal protective equipment (gloves, tight clothing, a respirator and glasses - when spraying).

If after application the primer still remains in the jar, it must be tightly closed and stored at a temperature not lower than 0 °, but not more than a year from the moment of opening.

Conclusion

Tiefengrund Knauf is a deeply penetrating primer inside a surface with large or small pores. Strengthens the base and reduces the consumption of future paintwork. It is definitely recommended for use. You need to buy only a quality mixture, in specialized stores, if you have a certificate,

KGAUF Haft Emulsion should be stored at positive air temperatures; short-term storage of the primer is allowed at a temperature of -5 ° С.

How to choose a primer

Properly selected primer provides a reliable adhesion of the base and finishing materials. Priming with poor-quality material can lead to cracks, peeling of putty, paint and peeling of wallpaper.

Here are the main criteria for choosing the optimal primer:

  1. It is desirable that the primer and finishing material have a similar basis. For example, acrylic water-soluble “primer” is suitable for water-dispersed acrylic paint.
  2. An important selection criterion is the type of substrate, namely, the ability of the surface to absorb. Deep penetration primers consist of tiny particles that easily penetrate deep into the material through micropores (up to 10 cm). Reinforcing primers interact only with the surface of the base.
  3. The reinforcing “primer” is best used on substrates that do not require special treatment. Priming the entire surface with a deep penetration primer will cost more.
  4. When buying, you can easily determine the type of primer by evaluating its transparency. The deep-action primer has a more transparent consistency, and the firming “primer” looks like milk.
  5. For the treatment of walls, floors and ceilings in damp rooms, special antifungal primers must be used to prevent the formation of mold.

The use of a primer can improve the operational and decorative qualities of the finish both indoors and outdoors. Priming the surface is an easy process and you can do it yourself. The primer can reveal all its positive qualities only if it is correctly selected, and no mistakes were made during its storage.

Primer Knauf - specifications

The most significant technical characteristics possessed by Knauf primer include the following:

  1. Primer Knauf is well compatible with all building materials for decoration made by the company of the same name and not only. This makes it possible during repair work not to compare separately the compositions with building materials.
  2. The minimum level of consumption of the solution.
  3. The stability of external primers before temperature changes, the creation of water resistance and natural ventilation.
  4. Lack of toxic substances.
  5. Reliable adhesion of the building material to the treated surface.

You should know that Knauf primers are considered an expensive product, and there are many cheaper options on the market with similar characteristics. But as they say - the avaricious pays twice and, having bought a primer of unknown quality, you can spend a lot more financially on further repairs alterations.

In order for the Knauf primer to be correctly selected for any specific construction work, it is important to know what types of products exist today.

Types of primers Knauf

Knauf company produces several basic types of primers for use in various applications. All of the types of primers listed below can be used both at the stage of building a house and during its interior decoration.

Tiefengrund - This is a deep penetration primer that has no color. This composition dries quickly, representing an aqueous dispersion of particles of artificial resins. Tiefengrund is used to strengthen materials while maintaining steam transmission and incombustibility.

Estrihgrund - allows to reduce the water absorption capacity of the material.

Concrete contact primer - the composition of this primer includes real quartz sand, which allows you to process reinforced concrete and compacted concrete surfaces.
Grundirmittel - this composition processes materials that are capable of excessive absorption of moisture.

Putzgrunt - This is a white dispersion used for decorative plaster.

Isogrunt - cement surfaces are treated with such a silicone composition before applying Knauf decorative plasters.

Haft Emulsion
- used before puttying.

You should be aware that half of all success depends on how well the surfaces are prepared, no matter what the walls or ceilings are, when doing DIY repairs. The primer stage is very important for reliable adhesion of one building material to another.

Knauf Tiefengrund primer review

A primer of this type is made according to the German recipe and meets the European quality standard. It differs from many analogues by its vapor permeability, but it is also a moisture-proof component of the wall. As part of environmentally friendly ingredients, hypoallergenic, you can use the composition without protective equipment. It is odorless and dries quickly, which is convenient when using a primer indoors.

Knauf Tiefengrund primer is used both outside and inside the building. The main requirement for the treated surface is strength and hardness. You can use the mixture for processing:

  • gypsum boards and other moisture absorbing substrates,
  • cement and gypsum screeds,
  • gypsum and cement plasters,
  • compacted monolithic concrete base,
  • joints GKLV and GKL before applying gypsum putty.

Also, this primer is often used as a starting mixture before plastering or before applying stucco elements to provide better adhesion.

There are several varieties of Knauf Tiefengrund primer. Outwardly, they are similar, but there is a simple variety and one that can give in to freezing. True, it can only be frozen up to 5 times, and then it spoils. On the packaging of such a product there is a mark “frost-resistant”.

Cost, packaging and storage

Primer Knauf Tiefengrund is available in plastic, white buckets with an airtight lid (most often blue) and a metal handle. The film is not sealed. Packing of 5 and 10 kg. The cost depends on the type of primer, displacement and can range from 165 to 870 rubles, in bulk it will be a little cheaper.

Shelf life is 12 months, provided that the can is not printed. You can store in a warehouse where it is neither hot nor cold, away from heating systems. The frost-resistant variety withstands up to 5 frosts, but it is advisable not to specifically freeze the mixture. If this happens, it is thawed at room temperature, without heating and without accelerating thawing, otherwise it can lead to damage to the primer. If the packaging does not contain frost-resistant markings, this means that it is forbidden to freeze the primer, otherwise it will quickly lose its quality!

Frost resistant primers

Now available in frost-resistant version.

New items in stock:

  • withstand 5 cycles of freezing - thawing,
  • can be stored and transported at temperatures up to -40 ° С,
  • have no restrictions on the duration of freezing,
  • after thawing, they retain their properties,
  • have their own bucket design,
  • scope and other properties remained unchanged.

Important!

When freezing, do not accelerate thawing with heating devices or hot water, this leads to damage to the primer. Defrost at room temperature. Stir before use.

European quality

Knauf is recognized worldwide as a reliable manufacturer of building materials. It offers its customers a wide range of products at affordable prices. The goods of this company are produced at one hundred enterprises located in China, America, Europe, and also other countries. That is why the geography of sales of this brand is quite wide.

Knauf is engaged in the production of many building materials, including primers, which have various modifications.

Among the advantages of primers of this brand, the following points can be noted:

  • They are fully compatible with most finishing materials in the modern construction market.
  • The composition is designed in such a way as to minimize its consumption during application.
  • Primers of this company can be safely applied when decorating building facades. They are resistant to temperature changes and moisture resistant.
  • The composition does not trap air, which provides an excellent microclimate in any room.
  • Mixtures are completely safe for the human body, environmentally friendly.

The only drawback of this company's primers is their cost. Many companies in the modern construction market offer identical products at a lower price. For many buyers, this fact is decisive and they acquire mixtures of other companies.

The composition and properties of the primer

The material is a combination of the following components:

Fine quartz sand.

The main property of the primer mixture is to maintain the moisture leveling solution, which ensures uniform drying. Thanks to this feature, the plastered wall is guaranteed not to crack. In addition, the mixture improves adhesion and reduces the consumption of liquid finishing materials.

An interesting property is the antiseptic function, which prevents the appearance of any pathogenic microflora on the treated wall. In addition, "Concrete Contact" increases the vapor permeability of the intermediate layers, normalizing the process of air exchange between the interior and the street.

How to apply to the surface

The mixture is ready for application without preliminary preparation, however, professional finishers recommend stirring the composition before application to evenly distribute the components: sand may settle at the bottom of the package.

Before starting work, it is necessary to clean the surface of dust. You can apply KNAUF primer with a wide brush or roller, the best option for a large amount of work: a spray gun or a plaster station.

Usually two-layer application is carried out:

At the first pass, it is allowed to mix the composition with a deep penetration primer.

The second pass is carried out only by a clean “Concrete contact”.

Repeated application is allowed only when the first coat is completely dry. If you do not consider the time frame, then re-priming is performed after the first layer ceases to adhere to the hands.

Material consumption per 1m2

The value of flow rate plays a key role: it is important for builders to know how much material will be needed for surface treatment. Given that the cost of the material is not small, to know the exact consumption is equivalent to reduce the cost of finishing work.

It is worth noting that it is almost impossible to calculate the exact consumption: here you will have to take into account the features of the base. For example:

The ability to absorb moisture.

Accordingly, for smooth surfaces, the flow rate will be less. On average, on 1m2 leaves approximately 200-300 grams. It must be clarified that these figures are relevant for manual application. Using a spray gun will increase consumption, albeit to a small extent.

How long does the applied mixture dry?

Judging by the manufacturer's recommendations, for complete drying, it is necessary to order 12 hours. However, this indicator is not an axiom and the drying time depends on environmental conditions. At optimum temperature, the applied layer can dry through 3-4 hours.

If the room remains high humidity, you will have to wait about a day.

How to choose?

A correctly selected primer provides high-quality adhesion of the base and finishing materials.

Priming with a product of inadequate quality leads to cracks, peeling of wallpaper.

It is better to immediately get a quality solution and avoid all these troubles.

Knauf primer selection criteria:

  • The primer and material for further finishing should have one basis.
  • An important criterion is the type of base. Solutions of deep action incorporate the smallest particles. Strengthening solutions interact only with the surface. This must be considered when buying.
  • Strengthening composition can be applied on grounds that do not need any treatment. It will be more economical.
  • It is necessary to determine the type of solution, while evaluating its transparency.
  • For processing in rooms with high humidity it is worth using antifungal primers. They will protect the room from mold.

See Knauf primer review in the next video.

What is better "Concrete contact" or a primer?

In fact, these are the same materials that prepare the base for the finish. Moreover, the compositions have different properties, which determines the appropriateness of their use. The difference is as follows:

"Concrete contact" is an adhesive composition that turns a smooth surface into a rough one to increase the adhesion of materials.

Primer - a composition impregnating the surface to a certain depth, which prevents moisture from drawing out from the leveling solutions.

If we say that it is better, then Betonokontakt looks more attractive, but it also costs much more than deep penetration primers.

Than diluted when the mixture thickened

Finishing material is initially sold in optimal consistency, so when applied manually, the composition is usually not diluted with water. The liquid solution will not be able to provide reliable adhesion, the unused composition will have to be constantly mixed so that the sand does not settle.

With mechanical spraying, it is allowed to add tap water in a ratio of 2: 1.

Is it possible to glue wallpaper directly on "Concrete Contact"?

No you can not. The mixture creates a rough surface, respectively, close contact between the wall and the finish disappears. Adhesive just does not hold the wallpaper. Before wallpapering, you will need to additionally treat the wall with finishing putty in order to maximize the leveling of the surface.
